Key West Nightlife: Bars, Clubs & Duval Street

Key West nightlife means Duval Street: a mile-long strip of open-air saloons in Old Town where a band is playing somewhere from late morning to 2am, and the latest bars run to 4am. It is a bar-and-live-music town, not a club town, and almost everything is walkable. Expect $6-9 beers and $10-16 cocktails, no real dress code, and a free Mallory Square sunset before the bars fill. The best stretch to go out is December through March; the slowest is hot, stormy late summer.

That seasonal swing matters more here than in most US party towns. High season runs December through April and peaks January through March, when snowbirds and spring-break run-up pack Duval every night of the week. The two wildest nightlife windows are calendar events: Key West Pride in early June (a five-day Duval blowout with a parade and packed Pink Triangle bars) and Fantasy Fest in late October, a 10-day costume bash that draws roughly 75,000 people and is the biggest party week of the year. New Year's Eve is its own spectacle, with the famous drag-queen shoe drop at the Bourbon Street Pub. The flip side: late August and September are hot, humid, deep in hurricane season, and a few venues quietly trim hours or take short closures. Since most bars are open-air, an afternoon storm can briefly soak the party too.

What is the main party street in Key West?

Duval Street is the single answer. It runs about a mile from the Gulf side to the Atlantic, and the closer you get to the cruise and seaport end (lower Duval), the busier and rowdier it gets as the night goes on. The classic move is the Duval Crawl, drifting bar to bar with a go-cup in hand. Florida bans open containers in cars, but Key West tolerates a plastic go-cup on the Duval entertainment strip, so you can legally carry your drink between stops. Glass on the street is discouraged.

Sloppy Joe's Bar is the anchor: a live-music saloon on the corner of Duval and Greene since 1937, tied up in Hemingway lore, with bands roughly 10am to 2am and merch that has gone genuinely worldwide. A block away, Captain Tony's Saloon at 428 Greene Street is the original Sloppy Joe's location, a quirky dive with bras on the ceiling and a hanging tree inside. Irish Kevin's at 211 Duval is the loud, sing-along, get-the-whole-bar-involved live show that runs seven nights. Willie T's at 525 Duval is the one papered floor-to-ceiling with signed dollar bills. None of these charge a cover.

How the Duval Crawl actually works

Here is the honest trade-off. The lower-Duval saloons are fun, free, and built for tourists, which also means they are the loudest and most crowded after midnight. Locals tend to peel off to two places. Green Parrot Bar, an open-air corner dive at 601 Whitehead Street, has been voted the island's best live-music venue for years running; it stays open until 2am Sunday through Thursday and 4am Friday and Saturday, and on band nights you want to arrive before 9pm or you will stand. The other locals' escape is the Historic Seaport, where Schooner Wharf Bar at 202 William Street sits on the old shrimp docks, open roughly 8am to 2am, dog-friendly, with live music and multiple happy hours. It calls itself the last little piece of Old Key West, and it earns it.

A few more crawl-worthy stops, each with its own character. Hog's Breath Saloon at 400 Front Street is the open-air spot near the sunset end with daily bands. The Bull & Whistle at 224 Duval is a three-level corner bar; the rooftop, the Garden of Eden, is Key West's only clothing-optional bar (21+, no phones or cameras, be respectful). Two Friends Patio at 512 Front Street is an open-air karaoke institution since 1967 that streams its singers on a webcam. Margaritaville at 500 Duval is the original Jimmy Buffett spot, more dinner-with-music than late-night, closing around 10-11pm. Pace yourself: drinks run pricier here than mainland Florida because it is a tourist island, so happy hours (commonly 4-6pm) are where the value is.

If you would rather have someone else handle the route, a guided pub crawl is the easy on-ramp. The standard 2.5-hour Duval Street crawl runs around $43 and hits five bars with a guide and a souvenir tee, which beats wandering blind on a busy night. There is also a drag-led crawl through the Pink Triangle (around $45) and a couple of well-rated haunted pub crawls if you want history and ghost lore with your drinks.

Key West for gay nightlife and drag

The 700-900 block of Duval is the Pink Triangle, one of the densest LGBTQ+ bar clusters in the country, and the crowds mix gay and straight without anyone caring. Nightly drag is a core attraction here, not a side act. Bourbon Street Pub at 724 Duval is the anchor: a video bar with the longest hours of any gay venue in town (roughly 10am to 4am), nightly Men of Bourbon go-go shows from around 10pm, and a men-only clothing-optional garden bar with a pool out back. 801 Bourbon Bar at 801 Duval, in the landmark pink building, is home of the World Famous 801 Girls, the longest-running drag show in town, with shows around 9pm and 11pm (tip your queens).

Aqua Bar & Nightclub at 711 Duval is the award-winning drag-and-dance venue, with a nightly show around 9pm and admission for the drag show typically around $20-25 as of mid-2026. Aqua also runs half-price beer, wine and well drinks from noon to 6pm and again from 11pm to close, which is one of the better deals on Duval. Its sister space, Sidebar, a block over at 504 Angela Street, has one of the biggest dance floors and video walls on the island and runs late-night DJ and burlesque nights to 4am on weekends.

Does Key West have nightclubs?

A few, but manage expectations. Rick's & Durty Harry's at 202 Duval bills itself as the largest drinking complex in the Florida Keys, a warren of bars under one roof, and Rick's Upstairs is one of the only true straight dance floors in town: DJs, current hits, a balcony over Duval, open late and 21+, with an occasional cover on busy nights. The bigger dance rooms, though, are the gay ones (Sidebar and Aqua). There are no beach clubs or day clubs in the Miami sense, because Key West's beaches are tiny and man-made. The closest you get is Lagerheads Beach Bar at 0 Simonton Street, a small Caribbean-style waterfront bar with live music and sunset views, which is a daytime hangout, not a party day-club.

Getting around is the easy part. Old Town nightlife is compact enough to walk end to end in 15 minutes, and the free Duval Loop bus, pedicabs, taxis and rental bikes cover the rest. Uber and Lyft both operate, but supply is thinner and pricier than a big city, so do not count on a 2am ping in seconds. The one rule worth repeating: do not drink and drive, including on rental scooters, on these narrow streets. Walk or grab a pedicab. Bring a government photo ID, because bars card hard at the door after dark and for the 21+ rooms, and dress however you like; flip-flops and shorts go everywhere here, and there is essentially no upscale dress code in town.

One last bit of free fun: nearly every night, the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration pulls a crowd of street performers and onlookers right before dark, with no cover and no minimum. It is the natural warm-up before you point yourself down Duval.
