Gay Bars in Key West: The Pink Triangle Guide

The sweet spot for gay Key West is the shoulder months. April to early June and late October give you warm nights, open-air bars in full swing, and crowds that have not yet hit Fantasy Fest gridlock. Peak winter (January through March) is gorgeous but packed and pricey; late August and September are hot, humid and quiet, with some venues trimming hours during hurricane season. The gay bars sit on the 700 to 900 block of Duval Street, the Pink Triangle: Bourbon Street Pub, Aqua and 801 Bourbon, all within a two-minute walk, drinks running roughly $10 to $16, most with no cover.

That compactness is the whole appeal. You are not splitting an Uber across town between three venues. You walk out of one bar, cross the street, and you are at the next, drink in a plastic go cup if you want it.

Where the gay bars actually are

Key West does not have a separate gayborhood. The scene lives right on the main tourist strip, which is part of why it feels so easy. The Pink Triangle is the 700 to 900 block of Duval Street, plus Sidebar one street over on Angela. Three anchors do most of the work, and you can hit all of them in an evening without breaking a sweat.

Bourbon Street Pub is an LGBTQ video bar at 724 Duval known for the longest hours in the gay scene, roughly 10am to 4am daily. It runs nightly Men of Bourbon go-go shows from around 10pm and has a men-only clothing-optional garden bar with a pool and jacuzzi out back. This is the place that stays open after everywhere else has called it.

801 Bourbon Bar is the landmark pink building at 801 Duval, home of the World Famous 801 Girls. Their drag show is the longest-running in Key West, with two sets nightly at 9pm and 11pm, no cover, tips expected and well earned. The downstairs bar is loud and friendly; the upstairs cabaret is where the queens hold court.

Aqua is an award-winning drag and dance venue at 711 Duval, part of the AquaPlex group. The nightly drag show runs around 9pm with added Thursday-through-Saturday times, and admission sits around $20 to $25 as of mid-2026. Aqua is the spot people mean when they say "book the drag show," and it is a common launch point for drag-led pub crawls.

Where to actually dance

Key West is a bar-and-live-music town, not a club town, so true dance floors are rare. In the gay scene, two rooms matter.

Sidebar is a nightclub in the AquaPlex group at 504 Angela Street, with one of the biggest dance floors and video walls on the island. Late-night dance events run Friday and Saturday from around 11pm to 4am, sometimes with a cover for special shows. If you want to actually move rather than sit and watch, this is your room.

The other dance option is mixed rather than strictly gay: Rick's Upstairs, the late-night DJ floor inside the Rick's complex at 202 Duval, runs to 4am with a balcony over the street. It pulls a general crowd, but it is welcoming and it is one of the few places on the island playing current dance hits past 1am.

Outside those, the gay nightlife is bars and shows, and honestly that is the right expectation to set. The fun here is wandering between go-go shows and drag sets, not chasing a superclub that does not exist.

What it costs and when to show up

Drinks run pricier than mainland Florida because this is a tourist island. Expect roughly $6 to $9 for a domestic draft or bottle on Duval, $8 to $12 for craft or import, and $10 to $16 for a standard cocktail (more for the frozen specialty stuff). Cover is usually nothing; the exceptions are show admission at Aqua and the occasional $5 to $20 weekend cover at Sidebar or Rick's.

Happy hour is where the value lives. Windows are commonly 4 to 6pm, and Aqua runs half-price beer, wine and well drinks roughly noon to 6pm and again 11pm to close, which makes a late-night top-up genuinely cheap. There is real daytime drinking culture here, so a gay night out often starts in the afternoon: a few drinks at Bourbon Street Pub's garden, the free Mallory Square sunset, then drag.

Timing-wise, bars peak 9pm to 1am and the dance rooms fill after 11pm. Aim to catch the 9pm drag set, then drift to the later rooms. If you want a seat for the 801 Girls or the Aqua show on a weekend, get there 20 to 30 minutes early.

Drag shows, go-go and the no-cover math

Here is the trade-off worth knowing. The 801 Girls at 801 Bourbon are free to watch, twice a night, and the tip culture is real, so budget a few bills per show; the energy is rowdier and more local. The Aqua show is ticketed at roughly $20 to $25 but you get reserved seating and a more polished production. Plenty of people do both in one night, free 801 set early, paid Aqua show or a Sidebar dance later.

Go-go is its own thing at Bourbon Street Pub, with the Men of Bourbon running nightly from around 10pm. The garden bar behind it is men-only and clothing-optional, with a strict no-photos, be-respectful rule. Same etiquette applies at the Garden of Eden, Key West's only clothing-optional rooftop bar atop the Bull & Whistle at 224 Duval, which leans curiosity more than dance floor.

When the island goes all in

Two weeks define the gay calendar. Key West Pride is a five-day celebration centered on Duval every early June (June 3 to 7 in 2026), with a parade, pool parties and Pink Triangle bars packed wall to wall. Book lodging months out; Old Town fills fast.

Fantasy Fest in late October is the bigger blowout, a 10-day costume and masquerade marathon drawing roughly 75,000 people, with the main parade on the closing Saturday. It is not a gay-specific event, but the scene is front and center and the Pink Triangle is the heart of it. If you want maximum spectacle, this is the week; if you want to actually get into bars without a 40-minute line, skip it.

New Year's Eve is its own tradition, with Duval's famous "drops" including the drag-queen shoe drop at Bourbon Street Pub. Lovely chaos, very crowded.

Getting around and the practical stuff

The whole gay scene is walkable. Old Town nightlife is compact, and you can cover the Pink Triangle, Sidebar and Rick's in a 10 to 15 minute walk end to end. The free Duval Loop bus, pedicabs, bikes and rental scooters fill the gaps. Uber and Lyft both run but supply is thinner and pricier than a big city, so do not count on a quick pickup at 3am on a festival weekend; taxis and pedicabs are the reliable backup.

A few rules to keep the night smooth. Drinking age is 21 and bars card hard after dark, especially for the 21+ rooms, so carry a government photo ID. Florida bans open containers in vehicles, including Uber and Lyft passengers, so finish or ditch the go cup before you get in. Street drinking from a plastic cup is tolerated in the Duval entertainment zone; glass on the street is not. Dress is pure island casual, shorts and flip-flops go everywhere, and there is essentially no upscale dress code anywhere in town.

Where should you start? If it is your first night, do the Pink Triangle: an early drink at Bourbon Street Pub's garden, the 9pm 801 Girls set, then either the Aqua show or Sidebar's dance floor. Locals and repeat visitors tend to pace it slower, drifting in around sunset and letting the night build, because nothing here closes early and the best move is rarely the rushed one.
