What sets the place apart is that none of this hides. The gay quarter sits on the most valuable waterfront real estate on the island, not down a back alley, and the rest of the nightlife folds around it rather than the other way round. That is the whole pitch: a scene out in the open, walkable end to end, on a small island that treats it as ordinary.

Where exactly is the gay quarter?

The gay-bar cluster is a small pocket of Mykonos Town (Chora), on the old-harbour waterfront a couple of minutes from Little Venice and the Paraportiani church. Four venues carry it, packed close enough that you can stand outside one with a drink and watch the doors of the others.

Jackie O' Town Bar is the anchor, a waterfront gay bar by the old port with drag and cabaret nights and a crowd that builds from about 11pm until the street outside becomes the party. Cosma Bar sits nearby on the water, known for nightly drag shows. Porta Bar is the cruisy late one, set back from the waterfront, busy after midnight and locally famous for pouring some of the biggest drinks on the island. Lola Bar is the small, cabaret-leaning room with strong cocktails and an intimate feel.

Reckon on drinks around EUR 15 to 18 at the town bars, rising toward EUR 22 to 27 if you start with a Little Venice sunset first (Scarpa and Galleraki sit right on the sea, fresh-fruit cocktails, packed by 8pm). The usual rhythm: Little Venice for the sunset, dinner around 9 to 11, then the gay cluster from 11pm on. All of it is on foot, no taxi, which on a Mykonos night counts as a luxury in itself.

One absence to flag: Babylon, the old gay institution, has closed. If a guide still lists it, it is out of date.

Elia or Super Paradise: which gay beach?

The two gay beaches pull different crowds, so the choice comes down to what you want from the day. Elia is the main gay beach as of mid-2026, the largest sandy beach on Mykonos, well organised with rows of sunbeds and a gay-popular stretch running past the rainbow flag toward the far end (the cove beyond turns more nude and almost entirely gay). This is the calmer, sun-and-sea pick. Super Paradise Beach Club itself is mixed and walk-in friendly, gentler on the wallet than the Psarou or Paraga luxury clubs, and the bay runs from afternoon DJ sets into the night. Go to Super Paradise for the see-and-be-seen daytime party; go to Elia to actually swim and switch off.

Both beaches are LGBTQ-centric and welcome everyone, which holds true across the island. Mykonos does not really do gatekeeping.

XLSIOR in August: what to expect

XLSIOR Mykonos is the headline gay festival, and in 2026 it runs August 20 to 25, Thursday through Tuesday. It is one of the largest gay circuit events anywhere, drawing a reported crowd in the tens of thousands to one small island. The format is a rotating daily program: daytime pool and beach parties, sunset sets at clifftop venues, and main night events that run from midnight to sunrise. Past venues include the open-air super-club Cavo Paradiso above Paradise Beach, Super Paradise, and Jackie O' Beach.

The trade-off is plain. That week is the most crowded and most expensive of the season, accommodation books out months ahead, and individual party tickets sell separately on top of festival passes. Want XLSIOR? Plan early. Want Mykonos without the surge pricing? Come in June or September, when the gay-bar quarter is just as good and a sunbed costs a fraction of August.

Drink prices and the bill traps to dodge

Check menus before you order, especially at beach clubs and tourist-facing bars, where there have been documented disputes over padded cocktail bills, and confirm any minimum spend before you take a sunbed or a table. Carry a card and some cash, since some taxis are cash only. The cheap-but-fun fallback is the central Chora bars off the waterfront, like the long-running Skandinavian Bar (open since 1978), where shots and beers cost a fraction of the harbour prices.

When the gay night spills into the rest of Mykonos

The gay scene does not stay sealed off, and most nights drift into the wider nightlife once the town bars wind down. The late clubs sit in the Tria Pigadia (Three Wells) pocket of Chora, a two-minute walk from Little Venice. Astra runs roughly 8pm to 8am and flips from lounge to full club after midnight; VOID opens around 1am with a published events calendar; Queen of Mykonos is the champagne-and-cocktail glamour option. None are gay venues, but Mykonos crowds mix freely and the door staff are used to it.

For the big-room night, Cavo Paradiso is the open-air super-club on the cliff above Paradise Beach, doors around midnight, world-name DJs (the 2026 calendar lists the likes of John Summit, DJ Snake, Steve Aoki and Diplo), running to sunrise. Weighing Mykonos against Ibiza, the split is clean. Mykonos is glamorous, beach-club-led and walkable, with a compact gay quarter and a late, dress-to-impress rhythm; bars rarely fill before midnight. Ibiza has the bigger dance clubs and deeper musical heritage, but its gay scene is more spread out and mixed. Mykonos is the pricier of the two. Pick Mykonos for sophisticated beach days into late bars, Ibiza for mega-club nights.

A handful of practical notes to land the trip. The drinking age is 18, and a 2025 law tightened ID checks, so carry a passport or EU ID, particularly if you look under 25. Dress codes matter in town: beach clubs are beach-chic, but the late clubs and even some bars (Skandinavian among them) ban beachwear, sandals and singlets and want men in a shirt, covered shoes and long pants.
